Renew, Reuse & Recycle In The New Year

By Lenna Stockwell

Every year people come up with many interesting New Year's resolutions. For some, they wish to lose weight or become healthier. For other, they have goals such as reading more or perhaps accomplishing work-related goals. For still others, they wish to do something to help the planet. If you were hoping to make 2014 a year where you do something good for the Earth, here are a few easy suggestions.

Of course going off grid is no option for most people still. The cost of having solar panels or a windmill of some type for home use is rather high that not everyone can afford it. Still, know that you can save on the energy used daily. There is the strict implementation of "lights off when not in use," and you can also make sure that the thermostat is regulated and then reduce water and energy use by doing your laundry only when it reach to a particularly large amount of load. Also make sure that most of your appliances and light bulbs are energy efficient.

Since water is a daily consumed natural resource, being introduced to ways on how to reduce its use is a must. Planting native grasses and plants in the yard is a good start as these require less water. Take quick showers by limiting it to no more than three minutes each time. Should heating up consume time for your water to use, collect them in a bucket which you could later use in watering your plants.

Public transportation may be readily found when you are living in urban areas. Driving to work though becomes a "must" for many Americans who have no easy access to transportations like buses, trains or subways. What can be done though is committing to carpool with others for even two to three times in a week. And then there are those who may have workplaces close by, which means it might be feasible to walk. Walking about three times in a week is not bad. You see, you can definitely help in the reduction of carbon footprint and at the same time save on gas money and be physically fit too.

One of the easiest ways to help the planet is to simply recycle. Most cities and towns have recycling programs and at the very least you can recycle your newspapers, plastic bottles and aluminum cans. Often schools collect bottles or newspapers so you can recycle and raise money for a good cause at the same time.

It is common understanding that most type of plastic along with all aluminum is recyclable. Note that plastic comes with two types being thermoplastic and thermoset plastic. It is the latter one that is not recyclable but as far as all forms of thermoplastic is concerned, it's recyclable potential makes it acceptable in most recycling bins in many cities whether thermoplastic packaging or thermoplastic products. From water bottles to milk jugs and even Styrofoam cups and food trays - all these are recyclable. Becoming more active in recycling should help in ensuring that less is put into your local landfill.
